Her Story: Forgotten Female Heritage

In 1979 I saw for the first time the Neolithic* goddess figurines of the ancient civilization of Catal Höyük, Hacilar in Turkey.  These figurines together with the Turkeys women from the land showed me a new image of what a dignified woman looks like. Whilst I was studying Architecture at the Technical University Delft, I never (had) met such a role model for women in dignity or esteem. This motivated me to research figurines all over the world.

This Neolithic archetype of women has been educating me to be the dancer I am now. In 1980 I wrote a syllabus about the relationship between architectural design and the form and radiation of the figurines.  The figurines both from the Minoan Civilization on Crete the Turkeys Neolithic figurines from Catal Höyuk and also the figurines of Hacilar are good examples of the correspondence between architecture and the figurines. (As the temples in Malta and their figurines are)  The houses of Catal Höyuk were hidden under the ground, entered by the roof and the figurines in a Buddha-like position sitting and waiting in an internal state. This was different in  Minoan architecture with their houses, temples, and palaces.  They connect in a spiral way the internal bathroom with corridors,  opening up spiraling into terraces with open views into the landscape. Exactly like the snake goddess keeps the power in her belly so that she can radiate out into the world.
